Coordinator’s Message: Now is the time to dig deep and give it your all. The week before finals…hell week! Challenge yourself to make it your best study week yet. In class, participate a little more, even if your voice shakes (especially if your voice shakes!). After school, study a little longer. At home, stay off of Facebook and Instagram until you have finished what NEEDS to be done. Maybe you have a solid grade in a class, and no amount of studying is going to change it. No problem. Get a head start and go into second semester strong. Get a taste of how good it feels to commit yourself to the installments of success. You’ll never look back!

Cleveland Humanities Magnet Winter Drive: December marks one of the hardest times for the millions of homeless and food-insecure people in Los Angeles, so have launched our annual CORE Winter Drive. We will be collecting donations for Food Finders, a community-based organization to combat hunger in Los Angeles. The organization collects donations and then distributes them to community centers, shelters, and food pantries. Click HERE to see a list of items the organization collects and instructions. Extra credit will be given in all grade levels for a minimum donation of 5 items. Drop your donations in the old Magnet Office (now CORE Store) beginning Thursday, December 3rd and ending December 11th. In order to receive extra credit, bring your donations in a bag labeled with your full name and grade level.
Attention Seniors: This Tuesday December 8th from 6 – 8pm in the MPR is Financial Aid Night for Seniors. Don’t miss out on receiving important information about funding this next phase of your educational journey.
Congratulations Maddie Page: I want to congratulate Maddie Page for a fantastic Cross Country season. Maddie’s 6th place finish at the City CIF race is the highest a female from Cleveland has finished since 1979, and according to Coach Hernandez, Maddie is the first female runner from Cleveland to compete at the state level. Way to go, Maddie!
Boys Volleyball Update: Boys volleyball tryouts will be this Wednesday, December 9 in the big gym. Students should have athletic clothes and shoes and be on time.
Boys Soccer Update: This week boys soccer played Arleta, Narbonne, and Sylmar. The varsity scores were: a 1-0 win against Arleta, with Conor McCain score; a 3-0 win against Narbonne; and a 1-0 win against Sylmar. The JV scores were: a 2-0 win against Arleta; 0-0 draw against Narbonne; a 1-2 loss against Sylmar. Come out and support the team as they take on Van Nuys at home on Wednesday and Poly away on Thursday. Also, show your holiday support by coming out to the Monroe Tournament on December 19, 21, and 22 to cheer the Varsity team on!
Cleveland High School Drama Presents: Show your love for Cleveland High School Drama and their upcoming performance of Auntie Mame December 4, 5, 11, and 12 @ 7:00 PM in the MPR. Adults are $8.00 and Children are $5.00.
COREture: Winter is coming! (…for my Game of Thrones fans) Get your COREture gear– T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts– and don’t forget our new water bottles (in three colors) and the new zipped hoody! And remember, freshmen, bring your school ID to a volunteer parent in the Magnet Office to redeem your $5.00 off COREture by December 19th. All proceeds go to the program!
AN OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITY FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS!: Attention sophomores and juniors, Stanford University hosts a summer institute for high school students interested in the Humanities. It is a great opportunity to showcase your critical thinking skills and terrific foundation in the Humanities. The online application will be open soon. Go HERE and begin researching and collecting the necessary materials. Financial aid is available. You are qualified for this program; don’t let the opportunity slip away!
Arts Scholarship Program: Through its scholarship program, the Anthony Quinn Foundation supports high school students’ extracurricular study of the visual arts and design, performing arts, media arts, and the literary arts. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $3,000. Scholarships may be used for a recognized pre-college, summer, or afterschool arts education program, but may not be used for either secondary school or college tuition. To be eligible, applicants must be a young adult in high school who demonstrates exceptional talent, dedication, and a strong commitment to personal artistic growth and who will benefit from financial support. The foundation will begin accepting applications on October 15, 2015. Full applications must be returned no later than January 3, 2016. Opportunity for Juniors: The Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) is a six-week educational experience for high school juniors that offers challenges and rewards rarely encountered in secondary school or even college. Each program is designed to bring together young people from around the world who share a passion for learning. Telluride students, or TASPers, attend a seminar led by college and university faculty members and participate in many other educational and social activities outside the classroom. The program is completely free! One of our own, Olivia Wood, participated in TASP and said it was vital to her success during the application process and in her first year at Pomona College. The Princeton Prize: Princeton University is sponsoring an annual awards program for high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or community, they want to hear from you. A fellow Corebaby, Jaspreet Kaur, won this award last year! Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2016, will be eligible for prizes—including cash awards up to $1,000 for particularly noteworthy work. Congratulations Speech and Debate: Cleveland had a great night at the Taft Debate Tournament this weekend. We were the top team in Policy debate, Parliamentary Debate, and went undefeated in Lincoln Douglas. And congratulations Morgan Knight and Katie Song for their wins last weekend at the Speech and Debate Tournament hosted by Cleveland High School! Good work! You go, Corebabies!

Congratulations Cross Country Athletes: At League Finals on Thursday, Stevie Steinberg placed 6th place (16:20) in the Boys Varsity race and qualified to run in City Prelims. Maddie Page placed 5th place (19:27) in the Girls Varsity race and will be moving on to City Prelims as well. Daniela Alonzo placed 3rd place (21:44) in the Girls Frosh-Soph race and will be advancing to City Finals. Our Boys Frosh-Soph team placed 3rd in our league and will be advancing to City Finals as a team! Among these fast boys are Charles Balkcom (8th place, 17:33), Toby Icasatti (11th, 17:53), Leo Morinaga (18:02), Brandon Zarrabal (18:50), Daniel Sasson (19:12), Aaron Garcia (19:34) , Henry Calabrese (19:36), Brandon Le (20:30), Aaron Berger (20:33) and Ben Walker (20:49). And congratulations to Ben Arrendondo for breaking the 17 minute barrier, with his time of 16:57! Good work Scholar athletes!
PTSA Drive: Students, please support the PTSA (Parent, Teacher, and Student Association) by joining for $8.00. PTSA sponsors school leadership and club activities, senior scholarships, Grad Night, and other school wide initiatives. Flu Season: Staying healthy this flu season is particularly important to all of us, especially me! Please do your part to keep yourself and our community healthy by doing the following:
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness), vomiting and diarrhea, please stay home.
- The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
- While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Please avoid the Magnet Office if this is the case.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand wipes. In fact, keep them in your back pack.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
- The CDC strongly recommends getting a flu shot, if possible.
- Also, please avoid the Magnet Office if you are sick. Thank you!
Book Bundles: There are still 9th, 11th, and 12th grade Book Bundles available. Having your own copy of the books we are using is an invaluable tool and all proceeds go back to the program. Come to the Magnet Office for an order form.
Spirit Fridays!: Remember to wear your CORE t-shirt (or any Cleveland t-shirt) for a chance to win a gift card to one of many fabulous establishments!

Clean Up After Yourselves: Please do your part to keep your learning environment and other areas on campus clean. Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same! I do not want see your trash left on the floors for someone else to clean up. Thank you!
