World Language
Studying a foreign language is more than simply learning a new language. Through your foreign language studies at Cleveland High School, you will be challenging your worldviews, sharpening your critical thinking and analysis skills, strengthening your English skills, and opening the doors to art, music, dance, fashion, cuisine, film, philosophy, science, and more.

At Cleveland, our students choose from French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Every student in LAUSD must complete 4 semesters of the same language to fulfill their high school graduation requirement.
FRENCH:
Begin exploring the Francophone (French-speaking) world through customs, culture, historical ties to the US, grammar, and vocabulary. One-third of the English language is French and it is spoken in over 40 countries on 5 continents. As a Romance language we also emphasize similarities between French and the other Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan). We offer French 1, 2, 3, and AP French Language here at Cleveland.
JAPANESE:
Study the Japanese culture while learning vocabulary and emphasizing reading and writing skills in the target language. Our courses focus on elements of daily life, social relationships, and interactions within the immediate environment. As our newest language offering, we have Japanese 1 and 2 here at Cleveland with hopes of expanding to levels 3 and 4 in the future.
KOREAN:
Korean is the 16th most widely spoken language in the world. The grammar and phonetics of Korean are very different than most of the European languages. It has a phonetic alphabet with 24 letters and is very easy to read and write. You will be studying the interesting linguistic and cultural features of Korean including multiple speech levels, honorific expressions, and different particles that indicate grammatical relations in a sentence. Students will also participate in the annual Korean’s Parents Association Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. We offer Korean 1, 2, 3, and 4 here at Cleveland.
SPANISH:
Spanish is the 4th most commonly spoken language in the world. Begin exploring the Spanish-speaking world through its rich history, customs, cultures, grammar, and vocabulary. We focus mainly on official Spanish from Spain while interweaving aspects of the various other Latin and Hispanic cultures. We offer Spanish 1, 2, 3, AP Spanish Language, and AP Spanish Literature here at Cleveland.
