Coordinator’s Message: August 28, 2017 marked the 54th anniversary of the March on Washington. The March on Washington was a momentous occasion, the first of its kind, where hundreds of thousands of Americans descended on the National Mall to show support for Civil Rights. The keynote address was given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and it has become one of the most famous speeches in all of American History. We hear a lot about Dr. King’s famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” Well… we hear a lot about one line , “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Great line, but there was more. Dr. King spoke of the promises that had been made during our country’s founding and reaffirmed his faith in those promises, holding each of us accountable for bringing those promises to fruition. He described a dream for freedom, a dream that bound my freedom to your freedom. If you haven’t seen the speech (OR EVEN IF YOU HAVE), stop what you are doing, find it online, and revel in its brilliance.
This week, we commemorate another anniversary. Monday marks the 16th anniversary of 9/11. The connection? If Dr. King were going to give a speech on Monday, what might he say? Perhaps he would say, “We have come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.” Maybe he would urge us, “Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” Possibly he would advise us to “…make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.” I wonder if he would address the crowd by announcing, “I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.'” He might say, “With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together…” And maybe, just maybe, he would conclude by saying, “And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles [and Muslims], Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'” Sound familiar? Yes, those were the exact words Dr. King spoke 54 years ago, and they are as true now as they were then. Let’s honor Dr. King’s legacy and those who were lost on 9/11 by doing our part to bring about peace as brothers and sisters in the human family.
College Night for Seniors: Thursday, September 14th is College Night for Seniors. The event will begin at 6:00 pm in the MPR and very valuable information will be discussed. Ms. Howe, Ms. Morales, and Mr. Wasserman highly encourage your attendance, especially because so many of you have questions that will be answered here. College Night for Juniors will take place in October. Stay Tuned for details.
Support the Band: The Cleveland High School Marching Band & Color Guard will be hosting a fundraiser buffet breakfast at Applebee’s on Winnetka Ave in Chatsworth on the morning of Saturday, September 23rd from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time from any band student or Mr. Yassaman for $10. Each ticket sold raises $5 for the band and helps with instruments, equipment, music, and transportation. Join-A-Club Day: This Wednesday, September 13th at lunch on the quad is Join-A-Club Day. Come out (especially you freshmen out there!) and see what Cleveland has to offer.
PSAT Information: This year, the PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. It will be free for all 9th-11th grade students. Ninth and 11th grade students MUST register online as Cleveland is paying for the exam. YOU must register by 5:00 PM on October 1, 2017.

If you register, but do not take the test, YOUR parents must reimburse the school for the $15 cost (administration fees and unused examination documents)–this is noted on the form students/parents complete online. Tenth grade students DO NOT have to register for the test. It is mandatory for all 10th grade students and the District will automatically register students for the test. Questions should be directed to Ms. Drell in the College Office.
CORE Representatives Needed: Recruiting season for the 2018-2019 has commenced and we are in need of strong, enthusiastic, outgoing students who love CORE to represent us. We are looking for students of all grade levels who attended Lawrence, Noble and Holmes for the “Meet the Magnets” night at Monroe HS on Wednesday, September 27th from 5:30-8:00 PM, and for students who attended Walter Reed Middle School at the “Meet the High Schools” night at Walter Reed MS on October 4th from 5:30-8:00 PM. Magnet Tours: Magnet Tours have begun! Please be on your best behavior, keep the halls and outer areas clean, and show our prospective freshmen that “there is no place like CORE!”

Magnet Parents Association: SPREAD THE WORD…The next MPA meeting is Wednesday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. Please encourage your parents to stay “in the loop” and attend this very important meeting. All parents welcome!
Calling All Performers: The Music Center is hosting a series of classes for high school students in the arts called, Spotlight. Spotlight is a nationally-acclaimed scholarship and arts training program for high school students in the performing and visual arts. It is free to apply. Scholarship Opportunity: Do you know how far you will drive on the freeway if you take your eyes off the road for five seconds, the average time it takes to send a text? An entire football field. According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving makes drivers 23 times more likely to get into a “safety-critical event.” The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand the risks of texting while driving. Who may apply: You must be a high school freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or a current or entering college or graduate school student of any level. Home schooled students are also eligible. There is no age limit. You must also be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. How to apply: Complete the application form including a 140-character message about texting while driving. Tutoring Available: The Boys and Girls Club of the West Valley is offering free tutoring Monday-Thursday in our school library from 3:00-5:00 pm. They also offer college admissions workshops. One of the tutors is a CORE alumnus. Come to the Magnet Office to register.
COREture: We are selling VINTAGE COREchella t-shirts 2013-2016 for $2.00…THAT’S RIGHT…just $2.00. And we still have COREchella 2017 t0shirts for $10. Come to the Magnet Office at Nutrition or Lunch to get them before they’re gone!
Book Bundles: There are still 9th, 10th, and 11th Grade Book Bundles available. Having your own copy of the books we are using is an invaluable tool and all proceeds go back to the program. Come to the Magnet Office for an order form.
Agendas and COREture: We have CORE agendas available in the Magnet Office for $5.00. Also, don’t forget to get your COREture gear– T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts at great prices! All proceeds go to the program!
Counselor Changes: If your last name begins with A-K grades 9-12, your counselor is Ms. Howe. If your last name begins L-Z, grades 9-11 your counselor is Mr. Wasserman. If your last name is L-Z, grade 12, your counselor is Ms. Morales.
Lunch Applications: In order to attend CORE field trips, you MUST complete a Title I lunch application. Even if you don’t think you will qualify or don’t want to receive tickets, you still must complete an application. We suggest completing it online, if you haven’t already. Corebaby Email: Be sure to check your Corebaby email address EVERYDAY for important updates! If you use another email address as your primary email address, you can forward your Corebaby emails to that address so that you don’t miss anything! See Mr. Saavedra if you have questions.
Forgot Your Corebaby Email Password?: You can retrieve it, but it will cost you a dollar. Go to Mr. Saavedra in E10 for information, but don’t go empty handed.

Clean Up After Yourselves: Please do your part to keep your learning environment and other areas on campus clean. Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same! I do not want see your trash left on the floors for someone else to clean up. Thank you!
