Grateful

by Jennifer Macon

As we prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, I am mindful of the saying “If you are going to be grateful for anything, be grateful for everything.” I am grateful for my family and friends who make my life rich beyond measure. I am grateful to those I come across everyday who teach me a little something new about life and my perception of it. I am grateful for the abilities I have, my recognition of them, and the desire to do and be better. And I am especially grateful for my CORE family– teachers, counselors, students, parents, volunteers, administrators, clerical staff, and custodians– who teach me that education is a life’s journey, one we cannot do alone.

Be sure to take time to FEEL and GIVE gratitude. Studies show that the practice of gratitude has physiological effects that can benefit our heart rate, mood, and even the quality of our sleep. Expressing gratitude release dopamine and serotonin, which make us feel happier. Follow the Gratitude 123 Method: Explain what the person did for you, acknowledge the effort they put in, and describe how it helped you or made you feel.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Diwali

November 12

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. It holds great significance as it symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. People decorate their homes, light diyas, exchange gifts, and worship deities such as Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha. The festival is celebrated for five days, with each day having its own rituals and traditions.

Trans Day of Rememberance
Transgender Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice.”

– Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

Native American Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 23rd to November 30th as “American Indian Week.” However, following the advocacy of Native Leaders in the U.S. President George H.W, Bush passed a bill with Congress, declaring “National American Indian Heritage Month” as a month-long celebration in November.

Today, Native American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to reckon with our past and to reflect on the treatment of Indigenous people throughout American history.During Native American Heritage Month, it is important not just to celebrate the legacy that Indigenous history makers have left, but also to celebrate those who continue to shape our society, lead their communities, and impact our culture today.

Cleveland High School is located on Tongva land.
