Weekly Announcements (August 25-28):
Quote of the Week: “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” ~ Abigail Adams
Coordinator’s Message: I hope that everyone has settled in and began to establish good study habits. Along with organization and time management, staying informed is essential to success! Check your Corebaby email daily, go to Engrade and check your grades at least once a week, make appointments with your teachers to get their perspective on your performance, and go to our website moldy-prose.flywheelsites.com to read the posts, sync the calendar with yours, and check out the grade level pages. Knowledge is power!
Lunch Applications: In order to attend CORE field trips, you MUST complete a Title I lunch application. Even if you don’t think you will qualify or don’t want to receive tickets, you still must complete an application. We suggest completing it online, if you haven’t already. Click HERE for instructions. Print your confirmation form and bring it to the Magnet Office.
No School: Remember that Friday, August 29th and Monday, September 1st there is no school in observance of Admissions Day and Labor Day.
Agendas and COREture: We have CORE agendas available in the Magnet Office for $5.00. Also, don’t forget to get your COREture gear– T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts at great prices! All proceeds go to the program!
Book Bundles: There are still 9th and 11th Grade Book Bundles available. Having your own copy of the books we are using is an invaluable tool and all proceeds go back to the program. Come to the Magnet Office for an order form.
Seniors: The 2nd Annual College Essay Boot Camp will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM. The morning session will include two guest speakers, Audrey Kahane, a private college counselor who will speak about the admissions process, and Julie Frank, of Adventure Essays, who will speak about the importance of the college essay and give you some useful tips. The second session will include a write, revise, and write session with teachers and counselors offering you advice on how to improve. Lunch will be provided. See Ms. Macon’s email to sign-up for this very great event.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Our 2013-2014 College Admissions Initiative is in full force and kicks off with the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. Because we are a college preparatory program, we highly recommend all freshmen take the exam, and we require all juniors to take the exam as part of the CORE 11 curriculum. All sophomores take the exam free of charge through the LAUSD. The cost for freshmen and juniors is $15.00, and you can sign-up in the Magnet Office or Student Store during Nutrition and Lunch beginning September 3rd. There are also fee waivers available for students in the Free and Reduced Lunch program. If you think you qualify, please see Ms. Drell in the College Office.
CORE Representatives Needed: Recruiting season for the 2014-2015 has begun and we are in need of strong, enthusiastic, outgoing students who love CORE to represent us. We are looking for students of all grade levels who attended Lawrence, Noble and Holmes for the “Meet the Magnets” night at Monroe HS on Wednesday, November 1st from 6-8, and for students who attended Walter Reed Middle School at the “Meet the High Schools” night at Walter Reed MS on October 22nd from 6-8. Please email Ms. Macon if you are interested.
Tutoring Available: The Boys and Girls Club of the West Valley is offering free tutoring Monday-Thursday in our school library from 3:00-5:00 pm. They also offer college admissions workshops. One of the tutors is a CORE alumnus. Come to the Magnet Office to register.
