Awareness

by Jennifer Macon

Each month of the year commemorates a new culture, campaign, and issue to celebrate, recognize, or fight for, and sometimes more than one. Among several others, the month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As some of you may know, I am a breast cancer survivor, and I am certain that awareness in the form of early detection saved my life. I have been giving a lot of thought to the meaning of “awareness” lately, and I have come to believe that the word awareness means more than just knowing something exists. In order for it to mean anything, awareness must be more of a verb than a noun. Otherwise, what’s the point of the awareness.

I would like to encourage all of you, regardless of the issue, to commit yourselves to having awareness that is active. Ask questions; research and learn; encourage your friends and family; change your behaviors; and most importantly, make your awareness habitual, part of your routine.

For more information about breast cancer, you can go to www.nationalbreastcancer.org and www.breastcancer.org.

LGBTQ History Month
October is LGBTQ History Month, an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. October was selected to coincide with National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11) and the anniversary of the first march on Washington for gay and lesbian rights in 1979. This month provides an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about and celebrate the history, culture and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual communities.

Indigenous People’s Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes the indigenous communities that have lived in the Americas for thousands of years.

In a statement from President Biden, the first US President to recognize the holiday, he said Indigenous People’s Day is intended to “honor the sovereignty, resilience and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world. But we have more to do to help lift Tribal communities from the shadow of our broken promises, to protect their right to vote and to help them access other opportunities that their ancestors were long denied.”

This month, lawmakers from the House and Senate reintroduced a bill that would establish Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a federal holiday on the second Monday of October, replacing Columbus Day.

Before the president’s proclamation in 2021, many U.S. cities and states were observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Colleges and companies have also increasingly recognized it. South Dakota is believed to be the first state to have officially recognized the day (as Native American Day) in 1990. Native Americans make up about 8.5 percent of the state’s population, according to census figures from 2022.
