An Ode to Autumn

by Jennifer Macon

“Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul…but I must confess that I love you only because you are a prelude to my beloved October.” ~ Peggy Toney Horton

Autumn is my favorite season. Granted, there are only four to choose from, and don’t get me wrong, they are all lovely in their own way. But Autumn is my jam. I am grateful for the sun, but appreciate cooler days when sweaters aren’t just a cold classroom necessity. I love the warmth of fall colors and the excitement of harvest holidays. There is something magical about reaping the benefits of hard work, and resting in celebration of a job well done. Autumn reminds me of what’s possible when you put your mind to something. As you settle in to the school year, may you prepare for your educational harvest. Put in the work now, so you can rest and celebrate later. And don’t forget to enjoy all things pumpkin and spice! 😊

Thank you for all you do!

“That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air … Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”

Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

People of all ages benefit from some common tenets of wellness, but the specific ways that wellness and resilience are supported change throughout the life span. Strategies and activities that worked well in younger years may no longer be enjoyable or accessible later in life, but resiliency can be built at any age. We are encouraged to recognize the importance of strengthening resiliency, protective factors, and physical and emotional wellness throughout the lifespan.

We have many services available for Cleveland students. Let you counselor, Ms. Macon, or any of your teachers know if you or a friend need support.

Why We Celebrate…
Labor Day

One of the days we celebrate in September– Labor Day– has history worth remembering. It was born of the struggle of workers to dignify their labor by establishing living wages, safe working conditions, and the right to voice their discontent, a fight which lives on today. Many workers died for these rights, and in 1894, following the Pullman Strike, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday. in fact, it was President Grover Cleveland (the COREnections are everywhere!) that signed the bill into law.

Never take for granted the struggles of our foremothers and forefathers and continue their legacy by working hard, being responsible, and using our voices to ensure dignified treatment for all. Happy Labor Day!
