Quote of the Week: “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ~ Maya Angelou
Coordinator’s Message: I decided to leave it one more week…March is Women’s History Month, which honors the historic and contemporary contributions of women to American society. Before there was a Women’s History Month, there was a day. On March 19, 1911, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time by over one million women in countries around the world promoting equal rights, namely suffrage, for women. In 1977, the UN declared March 8th as International Women’s Day, and in 1987, spearheaded by the National Women’s History Project, the US Congress designated March as Women’s History Month. March marks another historic time in our nation’s history–the 54-mile march from Selma to Montgomery in protest of the disenfranchisement of African Americans, otherwise known as “Bloody Sunday.” In honor of both International Women’s Day and the Selma march, I would like to recognize the importance of women to the fight for freedom for African Americans. Dr. Martin Luther King is celebrated as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, but what often goes unrecognized is that without the labor, energy, dedication, brilliance, endurance, and strength of women, there would have been no Civil Rights Movement. Women like Amelia Boynton, Fannie Lou Hamer, Daisy Bates, Diane Nash, Rosa Parks, and countless others organized, marched, suffered, followed, and led, yes led! Take some time to get to know these extraordinary women this month (and the other eleven), and learn from their examples. There is much work still to be done!
Reading the Coordinator’s COREner Pays: Congratulations Jaspreet Kaur, Corebaby junior, who won the Princeton Prize for Race Relations! Jaspreet was chosen for her tireless work with the International Youth Media Summit, a non-profit organization, that brought fifty students from twenty-four countries to the United States. The students made PSAs that tackled issues like poverty, discrimination, youth empowerment, and by working and spending time together, students learned to respect each other. Jaspreet will be flown to Princeton University for a 4-day symposium on race relations, and if she wins the top prize will receive a scholarship. To read more about her work, click HERE. Congratulations, Jaspreet…we are so proud of you!

- The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
- While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand wipe.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
- The CDC strongly recommends getting a flu shot, if at all possible.
