Coordinator's Corner Weekly Announcements

Quote of the Week:  “A thinker sees his own actions as experiments and questions–as attempts to find out something. Success and failure are for him answers above all.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Coordinator’s Message: Beginning Monday, March 23rd, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) will be visiting Cleveland for three days to determine if we deserve to be accredited.  Accreditation is a term that originally meant trustworthiness, and today, “involves the expectation that schools be worthy of the trust placed in them to provide high quality learning opportunities, with the added requirement that they clearly demonstrate that they are about the critical business of continual self-improvement.” According to their website, the WASC Commission grants accreditation to a school based upon the following:

  • the school is substantially accomplishing its stated purposes and functions identified as appropriate for an institution of its type
  • the school is meeting an acceptable level of quality in accordance with the WASC criteria adopted by the Accrediting Commission.

Why Accreditation?  Here are just a few of the reasons we must have successful WASC visit:

  • Certification to the public that the school is a trustworthy institution of learning
  • Validates the integrity of a school’s program and student transcripts
  • Fosters improvement of the school’s programs and operations to support student learning
  • In December 2002 UC faculty approved a policy that requires all California public and private high schools to be WASC-accredited (or a candidate for accreditation) in order to establish and/or maintain an “a-g” course list.
  • Accreditation is required with respect to the Cal Grants.
  • Colleges and universities examine transcripts to determine if the students have attended accredited institutions.
  • Many districts have policies to accept credits only from WASC accredited schools or schools accredited by other regionals with whom WASC has reciprocal agreements.

Though I want us to be our best selves everyday, these three days (March 23-25) are crucial for Cleveland’s residential and magnet programs.  Do your part!  PICK UP YOUR TRASH, arrive to class on time, be participatory in your classes, be willing to share what an excellent education you have received here at Cleveland. And hey, we can start practicing today!

Clean Up After Yourselves:  I walked into school the other day and was shocked to see two lunch bags and empty baggies of protein bars and Baked Lays next to the gate.  Some group of students blatantly left their trash for someone else to clean up.  This is unacceptable!  I am asking nicely that all of you PLEASE take care of YOUR trash.  Now I am saying sternly that if you don’t pick up after yourselves and I catch you, there will be consequences!!!  Please do your part to keep our learning environment and other areas on campus clean.  Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same!  Thank you!

COREture Anyone?:  Just in time for the brisk winter weather, (whenever it arrives) we have our fabulous line of sweats, sweatshirts, and V-necks!  Sweats are $20, Sweatshirts are $25 (white soup can) or $15 (retro red soup can), and V-necks are $15 0r 2 for $25. Get em’ while you can!
